The Mosquito Misting System You Need
Mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks aren’t just annoying and life threatening to people, but to your pets too. This time of year it’s important as ever to make sure your pets are protected from the dangers these pests present.
How can these parasites impact your pet?
Fleas and ticks can carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, relapsing fever, and flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and cats. Also, don’t forget that these same parasites can jump on to you and spread disease just as easily.
Heartworms are a serious and often fatal illness for cats and dogs, and are a parasite spread by mosquitoes. When your pet gets bitten, the parasite is introduced into their body, and they can carry around for months before serious symptoms develop.
Which brings us to our next question. How do we know what to look for in our pets to see if they have heartworm?
Signs and Symptoms
The heartworm parasite that is spread by mosquitoes start out as larvae in the lungs. They rest in arteries as they mature into worms then migrate towards the heart, where they set up residence and eventually kill the animal. Animals that are infected with heartworm may have wheezing or coughing. Your pet may also show reluctance to exercise and fatigue after only moderate activity. As the disease progresses, they can develop a swollen belly related to heart failure. Prevention of heartworm by controlling mosquitoes is of the utmost importance to the health and safety of your pets.
Fleas and ticks are a little easier to spot, because you can see them on your pet’s body. If your dog or cat gets bitten by a tick and you notice illness, you should get them to a vet as soon as possible. Also, it’s important to save any ticks you take off their body in case it needs to be tested.
How to Treat
All fifty states have heartworm, so if you live in an area that has mosquitoes than your pet can contract heartworm. As you’re probably also aware, ticks and fleas are everywhere.
